Sony have launched a new slim, fast 5 megapixel camera, the DSC-T1. It looks quite nice and ideal if you want something small and compact. Check out the specs over at DC Resource. There will soon be a review, but because it is so new, there isn't one at the time of me writing this!
Sony have also launched another small 2 megapixel camera, the DSC-U40. Which is a more cash friendly camera.
I've got the Sony DSC-P9, a 4 megapixel camera which is feature packed, well built & compact. I've had it for a year now and I am pleased with it. The quality of pictures is excellent and also when getting pictures printed the quality is just like a normal print - You probably would not know it was taken with a digital camera.
At some point I will probably upgrade to a newer higher megapixel camera, but for a 1MP increase at the moment there is not much point in spending all that money. There are other brands producing good cameras, but I prefer to stick with Sony on this one as not only can I get Sony equipment cheaper, as far as their products go I'm usually impressed. The T1 doesn't have a real zoom, only a 3x optical. One of the reasons it is so compact. I'd prefer to have a camera with a zoom on, the P9 has a 6x, which is part mechanical and part optical and does a pretty good job.
Since I've got a few memory sticks (256mb, 128mb and some smaller ones) I have a lot of space even when shooting some movies, so I always work at the highest quality level the camera can do (2272 x 1704).
Sony are meant to be releasing an 8MP camera shortly, so quite a jump from the range of 5MP cameras. Really the quality difference would mostly be noticed when printing off pictures and mine are usually for online use but I get some printed sometimes.
I'll probably get a few more years out of mine and upgrade when the MP rating is higher.
I liked your little mini-roundup about Sony cameras, I am a big fan of the DSC-U20 (very similar to the U40) and here are some more T1 photos you might like http://www.jdhodges.com/photos/6830

Posted by: fasd at November 26, 2003 05:39 AMThe T1 *does* have real zoom. It only moves inside the case though. It is not the first camera to use this trick. Minolta has a very small camera that has the same kind of zoom lens(vertically mounted inside the case).
(I hate digital zoom. I only use optical zoom from a real zoom lens.)
